Tapering Off Psychotropic Medications: Integrative and Naturopathic Strategies

Description:

Psychiatric medications are used to treat mental disorder symptoms despite numerous side effects and limited efficacy for specific DSM-5 diagnostic categories like PTSD. Many, like the benzodiazapine class, are addictive and disrupt the REM phase of sleep. Still, others, like the antipsychotics, can cause dangerous metabolic side effects. Many of our clients and patients are placed on medications when children or during an acute phase of distress and never stop using them because they don’t know how to taper successfully, or they are advised not to by prescribers who often do not have the time or knowledge to help them withdraw. Many clients come to us seeking help, yet we often feel at a loss for how to guide them. This course presents a rationale and scientific basis for collaboration among all team members to assist the client in successful tapering and support the clinician in deprescribing.

This self-paced course will teach you how psychotropic medications contribute to side effects. You will learn a proven protocol that will help you guide your clients along with the prescribing clinician based on the art and science of readiness to taper by applying the Korn readiness to Taper Intake, managing withdrawal and discontinuation symptoms using integrative and nutritional strategies, and supporting a self-care program for the client.

A demonstration video conducting the Readiness to Taper Intake with a live model client is provided (40 minutes), and a demonstration of two culinary medicine drinks for detoxification support (8 minutes).

This is an intermediate program for all mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the effects of pharmaceuticals on mitochondria, and how their dysregulation connects to inflammation, stress, gene expression, and cellular aging

  • List the 5 key considerations to explore when assessing a client’s readiness to taper

  • Discuss psychotropic discontinuation syndrome and how to educate the client about it

  • Explain 4 components of the preparation stage, including diet, supplements, and at-home practices
