Tango Across Cultures: Therapy with a Ugandan Couple

Description:

This program will explore adaptations to technique and responsiveness to culture when using the Emotionally Focused Therapy model with a couple from Uganda and processing emotion.

This summer, Dr. Paul Guillory and Dr. Elmien Lesch led the first ever EFT Externship training in East Africa through Conexa's "Project Uganda", attended by 81 mental health therapists from around the region. This groundbreaking initiative opened up numerous important cultural and contextual topics around attachment theory systemic work in East Africa such as the effects of trauma from Intimate Partner Violence, colonialism and poverty as well as the differences in emotional processing with men and women.

During this initiative, Dr. Guillory recorded a live session with a Ugandan couple. In "Tango Across Cultures", Dr. Guillory will present his live session to fellow trainer Dr. Lesch, EFT Trainer Dr. Kathryn Rheem and a panel of distinguished East African therapists to explore the EFT process through a multicultural lens and an East African context

This is an introductory program for all mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify points of culture and context specific to the East African couple in therapy

  • Identify different techniques in Emotionally Focused Couple therapy that comprise the "Tango"
