Compassion Fatigue and Professional Resilience

Description:

This is an intensive, experiential training to help clinicians prevent compassion fatigue and other work-related stress disorders. This course is an inoculation or vaccination against the potentially painful effects to clinicians working with troubled and traumatized populations. This training is also intended to produce an ameliorative effect upon the current compassion fatigue symptoms that participants may be experiencing. This training-as-treatment effect for this training has been published in several journals and is recognized as an effective treatment for the symptoms of compassion fatigue. The workshop is a potent alchemy of didactic information, experiential processing, and transformative techniques that assists the professional and/or volunteer care provider in resolving symptoms of compassion fatigue while, at once, developing resiliency skills and practices that prevent compassion fatigue symptoms in the future.

This is an introductory program for all mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Comprehend the history, causes, treatment and prevention of work-related stress for professional caregivers.

  • Differentiate the true causes of stress in professional life.

  • Demonstrate skills for successful self-regulation of anxiety, no matter the external context.

  • Integrate knowledge and skills necessary to prevent the symptoms of work-related stress and fatigue through enhanced resiliency.

  • Utilize self-regulation and perceptual maturation skills to significantly lessen the negative effects of work.

  • Extrapolate a self-directed Professional Resiliency Plan that can be easily integrated into professional practice.

About the Presenter:

Emily Hedrick M.Div. is a certified Forward-Facing® Professional Resilience consultant who offers training-as-treatment workshops for compassion fatigue. Like many, Emily acquired resilience skills the hard way: she began her career as a pastor and quickly developed compassion fatigue to the point of crisis. As she sought both information and resources for recovery, Emily encountered the work of traumatologist Dr. Eric Gentry and sought certification through his training organization Forward-Facing® Institute. She loved his approach so much that she joined the staff at Forward-Facing® Institute and is currently overseeing operations and training of future Forward-Facing® coaches in health and wellness and professional resilience.

Raised by a chaplain and a registered nurse, Emily’s personal encounter with compassion fatigue was not her only exposure to how toxic work environments and anxious systems can rob people of their ability to thrive in their work. Coming from a long line of compassionate pastors, nurses, teachers, and other helping professionals, Emily is passionate about equipping helpers with professional resilience skills so that they can not only survive their jobs, but feel fulfilled in their work no matter what kind of crisis they step into.
